Abstract

The riser is needed in casting to supply liquid metal because of shrinkage in solidification. The objective of this research is to investigate the shrinkage of gray cast iron in lost foam casting. The variabels in this research were pouring temperature and pattern thickness. The pouring temperature variation and the pattern thickness were 1300-1400 oC and 26.5 mm respectively. There is not a reduction size in the casting product than the pattern. This phenomenon is founded in all the pouring temperature and the pattern thickness. In the lost foam casting of gray cast iron, the riser is not necessary. Effect of the unbounded sand and the graphite expansion causes the shrinkage in solidification of gray cast iron can be ignored.
